APP waterproofing membrane is a widely used waterproofing method, particularly for roofs, basements, and other structures where reliable water resistance is critical. APP membranes are a type of modified bitumen waterproofing membrane, where bitumen is modified with atactic polypropylene to enhance its properties, such as durability, elasticity, and resistance to heat and UV radiation.
Flat Roofs
Adoption of the flat roofs has accelerated in Kenya in recent years. Most flat roofs are set at ten-degree angles or less and requires water resistance.
The Mabati Yetu Way
We work with the best manufacturers to provide a wide range of waterproofing membranes for use in commercial, residential, industrial, office, retail, road, and institutional properties.
Key Features of APP waterproofing membrane:
- The membrane consists of a combination of bitumen and APP polymer, reinforced with materials such as polyester or fiberglass. The APP polymer enhances the flexibility and heat resistance of the membrane.
- Membranes with different thicknesses (e.g., 3 mm, 4 mm) are available depending on project requirements.
- Some membranes come with additional coatings, such as mineral granules, for enhanced UV protection.
- APP Waterproofing Membranes are packaged in rolls. Each roll weighs between 30kg to 50kg, measures 10 meters by 1 meter and covers an average area of 8.7 m² (considering that they overlap). Their thickness ranges between 3mm and 5mm. They can either be plain which means they have no granule coating or with granules which means they have a mineral finish.
- APP waterproofing membranes are superior to liquid waterproofing. Most liquid waterproofing chemicals do not perform well when exposed to direct sunlight. Liquid waterproofing chemicals are therefore mostly recommended for internal use such as bathrooms and kitchen areas that will not be exposed to the harsh UV Rays.
How is APP Waterproofing Membrane installed?
- Commonly used on flat and sloping roofs, terraces, bridges, tunnels, and basements.
- Suitable for areas exposed to high temperatures due to its heat resistance.
- The application method is through a heated blow-torch making the surface bonding stronger and consistent.
- We recommend covering of App waterproofing membrane with interlocking tiles or screed if the area is trafficable – area is used by people.
Installation Process for APP waterproofing membrane:
- APP membrane is the most commonly used waterproofing material on concrete roofs and low-slope roofs. APP membrane is applied to asphalts with a torch. Applications of APP membranes aren’t limited to just roofs.
- Surface Preparation: The surface must be clean, dry, and free of debris or oil. Any cracks or irregularities are repaired before application.
- Priming: A primer coat is applied to the surface to improve adhesion.
- Torch-On Application: The APP membrane is heated with a propane torch to melt the underside, creating a strong bond with the surface.
- Sealing Overlaps: Adjacent sheets are overlapped and torched to create a seamless, watertight seal.
APP (Atactic Polypropylene) membranes are widely used in Kenya for waterproofing applications, particularly on flat roofs, basements, and other structures requiring effective water resistance. These membranes are favored for their durability, flexibility, and resistance to UV radiation, making them suitable for the Kenyan climate.
When selecting an APP waterproofing membrane, consider factors such as the specific application area, environmental conditions, and whether the membrane will be exposed to direct sunlight or foot traffic. Consulting with professionals can help determine the most suitable product for your needs.
